Its me Vicious wrote:I'm probably the newest player on OB that plays consistently. Reading all you've said it feels like I've missed out on a lot of things that have occurred throughout OB history. Awww sounds like fun.

Well yeah that and the player base was outstanding. There was usually 8-14 players on at a time and all day.

2006-2008 was probably the last few years the game was full of hall of gamers and great prospects.

But I beg to differ, 5 years down the line we'll see John and Fatny commemorating their days on the forums just like you are right now. In the future there's definitely a place for much better boxers than there are right now, even if it is just one or two people.

The game was different back then Vicious, which had room for different styles, sluggers could slug against boxers, now it is a case of being the most accurate and landing the big right straight. I've said it for a while now, many fighters fight the same.

There's no "boxing" though.

Pure technical boxers were among the rarest fighters in OB, but still very successful. There was a lot of boxer/punchers....in fact most of your run of the mill fodder fell into this...other than your noob sluggers...the slightly better version of the noob slugger was the standard boxer/puncher.

PURE boxers were a rare breed. Myself, Tyrant, Larry Holmes, Black Bear, African Assassin, Ray Johnson, sugarray, Boxa, Flash ...just a few names that come to mind. Some of us focused on more work rate like myself and Bear while guys like Larry and sugarray focused on more counters with air tight defense.

Point being, the entire point of the style was to spam "safe' light punches, keep your stamina high(also worth noting that punching power had a MUCH MUCH slower regen, especially with low stamina) and break your opponent down. Guys like AA focused on the late TKO exclusively while others like myself and Flash would focus on winning rounds to force the opponent to either sell out and get TKO'd or lose on points.

This was always about accuracy and ring smarts, the difference is this strategy is horrible now because breaking an opponent down is extremely difficult to the stamina settings, but also because "safe" punches have no counter stun anymore and thus aren't safe at all..a lot of heavy punches go right through the light punches...like the straight right...

You could ALWAYS time the right hand over the top of the jab, but it was MUCH harder to do because of much stricter stun. The only people who could consistently time the right hand on me in my prime(when I was one of the best jabbers in the game) were all time greats like Viper and Sal...both with notoriously devastating straight rights...now pretty much any scrub who plays can do it easily.

I also disagree with you that it's mostly about accuracy....it's mostly about landing big punches.....a very specific kind of accuracy...setting up like crouching straights to the body and things like that. Light punches don't break down opponents very well nor do they drain their stamina on the counter so yeah...it's botbox.

No, the stun and power settings were completely different, not to mention Mikkel tinkered with the movement speed...once you get inside you go slower moving forward for some reason, while in the old version movement speed was static.

Fatny is the games greatest player and has been a shell of his former self....videos of old fights are forever gone(we should've really put some matches on YT in OB's heyday), but Fatny was a technical genius that used precise timing. He bulled his opponents into the corner and used the most economical and accurate attack ever seen to dismantle his opponents. This is how Fatny was able to peel off 200+ winning streaks multiple times during his peak.

Fatny was forced to become a botboxer with the new settings and that type of shit is for COD playing fast twitch teens.

I've been playing this game since 05 and have never been able to chain together a single punch combo in my life...my "handspeed" is terrible(I've never really understood or been able to figure out how to chain punches fast like that and usually messed up my button inputs) but I hung around the top 10 for most of my prime just using ring savvy and knowledge of many technical nuances...even today after not playing for years I can still jab the pants off of anyone....although it's not worth much these days because the jab is crap and doesn't pay much dividends in a long fight anymore.

The reason this happened in the first place is because Mikell got bored one day and just decided that punches were too weak and we needed more Butterbean style slugfests where pretty much everything would KO you....but he never backed up the original settings.
Remember when this game wasn't johnbludger style botbox and you actually had to use your brain?

Remember when shuffle body wasnt worthless and had stun and counterstun? Remember when the shuffle body clinch tactic was a textbook staple of knowledgeable technical sluggers like Fatny, the Sniper, Reaper and other greats.

Remember when the crouching 3 wasn't overpowered garbage that ignores counters?

Remember when weak punches like the jab and body jab had counterstun to keep your opponents honest so they could just spam power shots?

Remember Red Viper, Nigel Benn, Sal Sanchez style combination punching where you could actually punish botboxing by KOing them with a counterpunch stun combo...whether it be short uppercuts, short hooks, long uppercuts or strong control 2 body punches.

Remember when new players had to learn the psychology behind the game before getting "good", because not everyone fought in the exact same manner because only one style really works?

Womp womp OB...womp womp.

I was Undisputed Champion as well.

The reason that Viper and I weren't tallied is because apparently the criteria for Undisputed Champion changed.

It used to be 3 belts and one of the regional titles but I suppose that was retconned when they did away with them.

Anyway, I was an Undisputed Champion shortly before John became Superchamp.

In fact I was one fight away from being OB's 7th SUPERCHAMP and was TKO'd in the 13th round by Red Viper.
lmfao
I agree with Fatny, the game has run it's course, particularly when the game has been free for years and no real money is made on it.

It was fun while it lasted, had some great memories from more than a half dozen years here.
Ah...the good old days....lmao
Somehow Fatny has the title. Shit makes no sense.
Lol guys, that's pretty funny.

I'm not top 5, I'm pretty horrible.
Lean back is pretty powerful, but I like it because the range is tricky and it stops people from cross-arm hugging you when hurt.

I never liked the crouching right hand to the body. Way to easy to combo, way to quick. It is the most devastating punch in the game right now, and probably responsible for 80 percent of the KOs. If someone hits you while you are crouching just forget about it, you can have full body health and you wont be able to get up in time to avoid the 2 second onslaught of right crosses.
Just want to box a little. I'll see you around.
Welcome.
